Total revenue from video games in 2017 exceeded $ 100 billion. According to the report by SuperData in the past year, the game brought more than $2.1 billion worth of revenue to the developers. There are various reasons why League of Legends is among one of the top played games in the world.
Riot making profits year in and year out
League of Legends is not the first year recognized as the most profitable game. In 2015 and 2016, the title took first place in the list of the most profitable projects among free computer games. Then the income of Riot Games from the League of Legends reached $ 1.6 and $ 1.7 billion, respectively.
Franchising of the NALCS
In May 2017, Riot Games announced the transition of the North American LCS league to a franchise model. The 2018 season includes popular teams like Cloud9, Team SoloMid, Team Liquid, OpTic Gaming etc. In the list, you might have seen some names from the NBA because NBA LoL teams are also competing this season. It just shows that how much the League is stable in the region as these veteran franchises are making a $10 million investment in eSports.
Inauguration of the Academy League
To focus on the future of LoL apart from the generation of revenue, Riot has started to focus on the next generation of pro gamers. The most profitable franchise has inaugurated The Academy League. The objective of the league is to train the upcoming stars in the NA LCS. Moreover, apart from the NA LCS talent, The Academy League is also focusing on the foreign talent as the regulations allow each team to one to two foreign players. This a great exercise for Riot, as they are not only offering a dedicated training ground to young stars but also offering them respectable contracts, so these newbies can focus on the game without any financial issues whatsoever.
Giving the community what it wants
This success in revenue of Riot is because the developers have a wonderful habit of listening to the community. The game is constantly updated with new map features, new champions and new skins that’s engages the players to not only spend their time but also their money because they are getting every single worth of their penny. However, these in-game purchases are not “pay to win” features. They are just cosmetics to the map and the champions.
Not a self-serving organization
The revenue model of League is not just for the company. They happen to offer generous contracts to every single pro team of the title. This is a great way to satisfy the financial needs of the players as well as giving them a platform to engage their skills rather than getting in problems with the private teams over contracts with loopholes. This is the main reason to why League has been operating for almost 10 years and will probably last another 10 more (and more).
