Riot and Tencent Project Partnership: League of Legends coming to mobile?

on

And here we go once more, after the recent and “not well” reception of announcement of classic PC and console games on Mobile platforms, now it is time for League of Legends coming to iOS and Android.

League of Legends has remained a massive success for Riot games, the gaming industry, and Esports altogether. Until now, Riot has avoided jumping on the cash grabbing and moving League of Legends to mobile, but as the unknown resources suggest, the partnership project between Riot games and Chinese giant – Tencent Until now, Riot has avoided jumping on the cash grabbing and moving League of Legends to mobile, but as the unknown resources suggest, the partnership project between Riot games and Chinese giant Tencent (acquired absolute control of Riot Games in Late 2015) has been going on for a year now.

Rumors:

As the unnamed resources by Reuters suggest, Riot Games and Tencent are working together over the production of a Mobile Edition of League of Legends. Followed by another leak, it is expected to NOT be released in 2019.

Just another Arena of valor?

It is feasible to port League of Legends on Mobile systems iOS and Android. However, a drawback would be uneasy gameplay for long matches on mobile devices. So we should be expecting a mobile-friendly League of Legends.

Now, this boils down to just another Arena of Valor when we cut down complexities and match length, porting it on a mobile.

For those unaware, Arena of Valor is an adaptation of Honour of Kings, that was a past project for Tencent. All things considered, it was a failure according to analysts and was not popular enough to connect with an enormous audience.

Learning from the past:

Jumping to mobile gaming, is a tricky project to handle for any developer.

We can consider two examples of massive gaming companies, expanding a branch to the mobile gaming industry and the difference of the approach.

To start with, we look at what happened with Blizzard and Diablo Immortal, the announcement was just focused on Diablo Immortal and resulted to be a huge disappointment for fans all over the world.

Now we look at the approach Bethesda took to bring the Elder Scrolls series to the mobile gaming scene. Foremost, the announcement was unfocused on the Mobile version of Skyrim. They announced next “actual” Elder Scrolls for PC, alongside their announcement for the mobile version. It was graciously received.

We can conclude fans will take the mobile version positively as long as the studio promises to retain the primary focus on the PC version of the game and handle the mobile port as a side project.

Can it be good?

We have seen what Tencent has managed to pull off, by bringing PUBG to mobile. It is a massive success for Tencent along with massive money.

With league of legends, it is quite unpredictable as changes have to be made in the game to make it mobile friendly. Failure to surpass Arena of valor figures will be a crushing disappointment for both companies. Therefore, they have to manage to avoid such a scenario.

It will surely be exciting to see how this project turns out and how will the partnership affect the course of League of Legends. League of Legends Mobile Championship can be a thing in a few upcoming years.

It is yet unclear on how the mobile version will work in terms of the gameplay, rankings and all other aspects.

With all being said, rumors seem to be true. But as we know with the gaming industry, it absolutely has to be taken as a grain of salt.
